Marmentini and her Dragon

The Dragon of Calderona is sculptor Rhea Marmentini’s life project, through which she is carrying out an experimental landscape restoration project through art. The aim is to rescue an old quarry on the slopes of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park in the municipality of Gilet (Valencia). It currently houses an exhibition of her work and a space for graphic creation managed by the El Dragón de la Calderona Cultural Association.

Patronage

The Calderona Dragon has been vandalized for seven years due to various circumstances. Currently, its creator, Rhea Marmentini, together with the Dragon Artists, have formed the “Calderona Dragon Cultural Association.” This association is duly registered, and its main objective is to repair and develop the Dragon.

El Dragón de la Calderona

In 2004, Marmentini came across an old rodeno quarry on the slopes of the Sierra Calderona Natural Park in the municipality of Gilet, where he had his “vision” and realized that this was the place for him.

The Awakening of the Dragon

The Dragon has been dormant for a long time due to a forest fire that ravaged the surrounding forest. During this time, it has suffered a great deal of vandalism because social media promoted it as a must-see stop on the hiking trails in the Sierra de la Calderona. After several years of dormancy, it was decided to wake it up and open it to the public in November 2020. Repair work to repair the damage caused by vandalism has also begun.

The Asociación Cultural del Dragón de la Calderona (Cultural Association of the Dragon of La Calderona) has been set up as a non-profit organization to raise funds for this purpose. Currently, this Cultural Association manages the restoration and reconstruction work through contributions made by the Dragon’s patrons.

At the same time, open days are being organized to welcome visitors and invite artists who are developing a variety of works, mainly of a graphic nature.
